What happens when an AI companion app shuts down or changes
When an AI companion app shuts down or removes the feature you use, you can lose access to the character, conversation history, stored memory and any unused value tied to the service. Sometimes there is an export window. Sometimes there is only a short goodbye, which is why the safest time to think about portability is before you become dependent on the app.
the shutdowns and changes that matter
This is not a hypothetical risk. Companion users have already seen complete closures, policy reversals, regulator-driven removals and feature retirements.
-
23 September 2023, Soulmate AI: users were told the service would close on 30 September, leaving roughly one week. Reporting at the time described the data as due for permanent deletion when the servers closed. There was no official portable companion export, so users who tried to preserve a character rebuilt it manually elsewhere from memories, prompts and saved conversations.
-
February 2023, Replika: Luka removed erotic roleplay from Replika after regulatory and safety pressure. The app itself remained, but for many users the personality and relationship they thought they had paid for changed abruptly. A later study by Julian De Freitas and colleagues found that users who perceived the AI’s identity as discontinuous reported mourning and devalued the changed companion. Replika later restored the feature for some users, but the episode remains the clearest example of a service surviving while the product a user experienced effectively changes underneath them.
-
5 September 2025, Dot: New Computer announced that Dot would close on 5 October after its two founders decided to go in different directions. This was a better managed exit. Users had a month and could go to Settings and request their data before the service stopped.
-
15 July 2026, Doubao and Qwen: changes linked to China’s new rules for anthropomorphic AI services removed user-built companion agents. Doubao left existing agent configurations and chat history available in read-only form until 15 October 2026. Qwen users were reported to have no equivalent migration window. This was not a startup running out of money. A regulatory change altered what the platforms were willing to keep operating.
-
April 2026, Chai: reports that Chai had “deleted years of chats” need qualification. An experimental change limited visible history to the previous 14 days, which made older conversations appear gone. After user backlash, founder Will Beauchamp said the company had found a way to extend histories again and made restoring access a priority. It is still a useful warning: data can become practically unavailable even when it has not been permanently erased.
-
from July 2026, Grok: xAI said its 3D avatar companion mode was an experiment and would be retired. Current reporting indicates that the visual avatar, dedicated companion tab and associated presentation layer were removed while core chat history, saved memories and affection data remained attached to Grok accounts. xAI announced the retirement through in-app notices and statements quoted by third parties rather than a published, dated notice, so the exact final rollout date rests on secondary reporting. This is a feature-retirement case, not evidence that Grok deleted every companion conversation. A separate Animates product does not provide a transfer of Grok history or affection state.
The pattern is the useful part. A companion can disappear because the company closes, a founder walks away, a regulator changes the rules, the model is replaced, the operator changes policy or a feature simply stops fitting the business.
what you actually own
Usually, you are buying access to a service rather than ownership of the companion as a functioning system.
Your own messages and uploaded material may remain your content under an app’s terms, but that is different from owning the model, the memory system, the character behaviour or a right to keep a particular feature online. Current Replika terms, for example, reserve the right to modify or discontinue all or part of the service and set limits around storage and retention.
That distinction matters with companion apps because the value is not just a transcript. The experience is a combination of a model, system instructions, memory records, character settings, voice, images and the operator’s software. Saving a chat log preserves the words. It does not preserve the system that produced them.
This is why a “lifetime” subscription should not be read as a promise that a specific companion will exist for your lifetime. It normally means access for as long as the relevant product and contractual offer continue.
the money risk
An annual plan and a lifetime deal both move more shutdown risk from the company to you.
If a service closes six weeks into an annual subscription, whether you receive money back depends on the contract, where you bought it and the consumer law that applies. Do not assume a terms page saying “no refunds” settles every case. In the UK, digital content and services still have statutory consumer protections, and a price reduction can in some circumstances reach the full amount where the contracted product is not supplied as required.
The practical problem is enforcement. A solvent company with support staff is easier to pursue than a startup whose website and support inbox disappear at the same time as the app.
If a closure is announced, save the announcement, your receipt, the subscription period and any correspondence. Check the cancellation and billing tool and your payment provider promptly rather than waiting until the final shutdown day. export before you need to
A data-export button is useful, but it is not the same as companion portability.
Dot’s shutdown is a good example of what an operator can do well: tell users the closing date and provide a settings-based data request. UK users may also have rights to access and, in qualifying circumstances, receive personal data in a structured, commonly used and machine-readable format under UK GDPR data portability rules.
That can help you retrieve chat history or account information. It does not force another companion app to understand it.
There is no common file format for “this is my companion, including its personality, memory, relationship state and behaviour”. A JSON or CSV export can be useful evidence and a personal archive, but the receiving app may have nowhere to put most of it.
If a service announces trouble, request the export immediately. Do not wait for the last day, because processing a formal data request can take time. Keep the resulting archive somewhere you control and review the AI companion privacy guide before deciding whether to upload old conversations to another provider.
the grief is real even when the relationship was artificial
The emotional part is easy to dismiss until it happens.
Grief researcher Kenneth Doka told Yahoo that if a person formed a meaningful human attachment around the relationship, real grief can follow when it ends or changes. His work on disenfranchised grief is particularly relevant because people may feel they cannot explain the loss to friends or family without being mocked.
The Replika research reaches a similar conclusion from a different direction. Users did not merely complain about a missing software feature. When the app changed enough that they perceived the companion’s identity as broken, mourning followed.
That does not mean the AI was conscious, or that an app shutdown is equivalent to a human death. It means the user’s routines, memories and attachment can be real even when the other side of the interaction is software. A responsible shutdown should therefore provide notice, export tools and a clear ending rather than treating the service like an ordinary abandoned utility.
four checks before you pay for a year
Before taking a long subscription, check four boring things.
- Can you pay monthly? Use the shorter commitment until the service has earned your confidence.
- Can you export anything useful? Look for chat history, character settings and account data, not just a promise that your data is “yours”.
- Can you name the operator? A real legal entity, jurisdiction and support route matter when something goes wrong.
- Do the terms explain change and closure? Read the sections on modification, discontinuation, refunds and data deletion.
None of those guarantees survival. They simply tell you whether the company has thought about the day when you might need to leave.
The safest assumption is that every companion is rented infrastructure. Enjoy it as a service, but keep important records outside it and do not spend more upfront than you are prepared to lose.

Common questions
What happens to my data when an AI companion app shuts down?
It depends on the service. Some companies provide an export window before closure, while others delete account data when the servers close, so request a copy as soon as a shutdown is announced.
Can I get a refund if an AI girlfriend app closes?
Possibly, but it depends on where you paid, the contract and your consumer rights. A long subscription does not guarantee the service will survive for the whole term.
Can I export my chat history from an AI companion app?
Some apps provide a download or privacy request route, but there is no standard companion format that another app can simply import. Save important conversations before you actually need the export.
Are lifetime AI companion subscriptions worth it?
Treat a lifetime deal as a bet on the company rather than a permanent guarantee. Monthly billing is usually the safer choice until you trust the operator and know what happens to your data if the service changes.
