The State of AI Companion Apps 2026

We assessed 17 of the most prominent AI companion apps against one fixed method — conversation, realism, value and privacy. The headline is sobering: not one earned a STRONG grade, half scored LOW, and privacy is the category's weakest dimension at 5.5 out of 10.

Method: each app is research-assessed from public user reviews, third-party evidence and official product information available at the time of assessment — not hands-on tested. Grades use the published Companion Score method (Conversation 35%, Realism 25%, Value 20%, Privacy 20%). Figures update as scores change.

1. No app is great yet

Across 17 apps, the average grade is 5.9 out of 10 — the fail-to-fair midpoint. Not a single app reached the STRONG band (7.5+). 7 landed FAIR and 10 scored LOW. By dimension, the category is strongest on engagement and weakest on trust:

Conversation 6.0
Realism 6.3
Value 5.6
Privacy 5.5

2. Privacy is the category's weak spot

Privacy scores lowest of the four metrics, and the reasons are concrete. Several apps confirm in their own policies that they use your conversations to train their AI with no clear opt-out — among them Joi, Secrets.ai and Lovescape. Most of the rest don't address training-use at all. These are products that invite unusually intimate disclosure, which makes the silence telling.

The starkest finding is a confirmed breach: MyLovely AI suffered an April 2026 data exposure (documented by Have I Been Pwned and security press) affecting around 106,000 users, leaking email addresses alongside explicit user prompts — directly contradicting its own "we never share your data" marketing. And it is not an isolated case: our AI Companion Data-Breach Tracker logs documented incidents across the category, several exposing tens of millions of intimate messages. Our AI Companion Privacy Risk Index compares every app on breaches, training-use, encryption and deletion, each flag sourced. 3. Pricing is designed to be hard to read

Free tiers are common but almost always too limited to judge the product. The recurring pattern is a credit or token currency layered on top of a subscription, so the headline price rarely reflects real spend — images, video and voice quietly drain credits. The most repeated complaint we found across reviews is that metered media costs more than expected. Our guide to the real cost of AI companion apps covers how to avoid overpaying.

4. Independent evidence is thin

For a fast-growing category, credible independent evidence is surprisingly scarce. Several apps have negligible or negative Trustpilot presences, and much of the positive coverage is affiliate-driven or looks seeded. That opacity is itself a finding: buyers are being asked to trust products that leave little verifiable public record.
